CINCINNATI, Ohio---Three Bearcats registered double-digit kills and hit at least .300 as the Cincinnati volleyball team picked up a three-game win over Butler during day two of the Vernon Manor Bearcat Invitational at Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center.
Julie DuPont was the offensive leader with 20 kills and a .432 hitting percentage, just ahead of the 19 kills and .333 percentage turned in by Maria Pongonis. Leslie Newell rounded out the trifecta with 13 kills and a .478 effort.
Lost in the huge offensive output were a pair of school records engineered by setter Laura Lauder. Lauder?s assist on the last kill of the match by Pongonis gave her 57 for the match, one better than her previous school record for assists in a three-game match. As a team, UC registered 64 assists breaking a mark of 61 set against DePaul in 2000.
In winning by scores of 30-27, 30-24 and 30-28, the Bearcats improve to 5-1 heading into tonight?s 7 p.m. contest with New Mexico State. Butler slips to 4-2 with a 5 p.m. matchup with Marshall on tap.
On the defensive end, the Bearcats were topped in blocks 10 to 5.5. UC made up for it with a 53-41 edge in digs. Lindsey Garrison led all players with 14 digs, while DuPont added 12. Alyssa Cress led Butler with 12.
Offensively for Butler, Kali Carter had 15 kills, while Areal Bienemy added 13 on a .500 hitting percentage.
After falling behind by a point early, the Bearcats turned it around in game one and led by as much as three throughout the frame. Cincinnati hit a stifling .354 in the frame, better than Butler?s .250 mark.
Game two saw both offenses explode, with UC carding a .421 hitting mark to .417 for Marshall. After carding 10 kills in game one, DuPont recorded five more in the second game.
UC dominated much of the third game, leading by as much as six at 19-13 and 27-21, before the Bulldogs came racing back following a time-out. Butler tied the game at 27 with five straight points, before UC scored three of four to close out the match. Newell started the late spurt with a kill, while Pongonis added two of her own.
The tournament continues at 5 p.m. with Butler and Marshall, followed by UC-New Mexico State. Presentation of the all-tournament team and team championship will follow the final match.
New Mexico State 3, Marshall 0 Trinia Cuseo recorded 17 kills and six blocks to lead New Mexico State to a four-game win over Marshall in match three of the Vernon Manor Bearcat Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Aggies posted 13 blocks for the match, holding Marshall to .058 hitting.
