Jennifer Sibert scored the match-winner against Memphis on Sunday. |
CINCINNATI, Ohio---Sophomore Jennifer Sibert?s first career goal proved to be the match-winner as the Cincinnati women?s soccer team halted its losing streak at three with a 2-1 victory over Memphis in Conference USA action on Sunday at Meyers Field.
Sibert (Goshen, Ky./South Oldham) fired in a free kick from 30 yards out after classmate Lauren Buland (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) was fouled by a Tiger defender just outside the box with just under 30 minutes remaining in the second half. Sibert finished off the play with a left-footed bomb that eluded Memphis keeper Kari Rawe. The deciding play was set up by freshman Becca Morris (Columbus, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) who eluded a pair of Tiger defenders with a dazzling move, before pushing the ball forward to Buland.
The win gets Cincinnati right back in the C-USA race after a loss to TCU on Friday night and improves the Bearcats record to 3-4-1 overall, with a 1-1 conference mark. Memphis slips to 1-4-3, 0-1-1 in league play with the defeat.
?Sibert?s goal was just beautiful,? said Bearcat head coach Meridy Glenn. ?This team just has a never say die attitude and they are always going to work hard. Today they rose to the occasion against adversity and got the win.?
Memphis wasted little time in denting the scorebard first as Yuiko Konno?s marker just 6:35 in silenced the home crowd. Melissa Savage penetrated deep into the Bearcat zone, firing a cross that deflected off UC goalie Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) right to Konno who tapped it in for a 1-0 Memphis lead.
The Bearcats didn?t stay down for long though as Tasha Wagner (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) tied the contest with her team-best fourth goal of the year just under six minutes later. With the Bearcats on the offensive attack, Lisa Stephens (Union, Mo./Union) was fouled by a Tiger defender in the box, awarding the Bearcats with a penalty kick. Wagner made good use of the opportunity, blasting a low shot to the left of Rawe for the equalizer.
The match was very even statistically, with Cincinnati holding a slim 11-8 margin in shots. Corner kicks were even at three, with Slye gathering five saves to four for Memphis? Rawe.
The Bearcats will next hit the road in conference play for the first time this season with a pair of contests next weekend. The action starts on Friday night as UC travels to UAB, with a Sunday afternoon contest at USF rounding out the week.
