INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team extended its winning-streak to three in an overtime win over Butler 2-1 on Wednesday. Kwamie Sarkodie scored his first goal of the season and posted an assist on the game-winner in overtime to lead the Bearcats.
The match remained scoreless until the 79th minute when Butler's Scott Olsen sent a pass from Andrew Pancio over the head of UC keeper John Adams to put the bulldogs up 1-0.
"It was a struggle," head coach Hylton Dayes said. "Butler deserves credit. They are a good team. The win was just a team effort."
Sarkodie (Dayton,Ohio/Carroll) tied the score three minutes later when he collected a loose ball and blasted it into the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.
The game winning goal came just three minutes into the first overtime period when Wiremu Patrick (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) sent a pass from Sarkodie into the open net.
"They frustrated us all game," Dayes added. "But Kwarmie was definitely what we needed today. We put him in the game late, and he connected."
The Bearcats, now 6-1-4 on the season, are off to their best start since the 1997 season. As a team, Cincinnati is ranked 19th in the country for goals against average (0.64) while Adams is 20th in the same category (0.62). UC returns to action on Wednesday, October 15 at Louisville. The match is set to begin at 7 P.M.
