MILWAUKEE, Wisc. -- The University of Cincinnati men?s soccer team clinched a share of the regular season Conference USA title with a 1-0 win over Marquette on Saturday. Sam Miller scored the lone goal of the match. The victory also secured the top seed in next week?s C-USA Tournament, the first time UC has been above fifth in post-season play.
Marquette committed a foul 22 yards outside the box two minutes into the second half, giving the Bearcats a free kick. Tim Brown (Wellington, New Zealand/Victoria University) blasted the ball directly at the Marquette goal. Adam Ubert made a diving save, but was unable to coral the rebound. Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) gathered the loose ball and shot it into the opposite side of the net to put the Bearcats up 1-0.
Although Marquette outshot UC 7-4 in the first half, the Bearcats did not allow a Golden Eagle shot after the intermission. Cincinnati keeper John Adams (Wadsworth, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) posted four saves and his second shutout this week to lower his goals against average to 0.76 on the season.
?This was as hard a fought game as we?ve had all year,? head coach Hylton Dayes said. ?This team set goals at the beginning of the year and the conference championship was one of them. This is just tremendous for our team and for the University.?
The Bearcats end the regular season with a 10-3-5 record, 6-2-1 in the conference, tied with Saint Louis for first in the C-USA. Marquette closes out 2003 with a 9-9-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 record in the C-USA. With the first seed, Cincinnati will have a bye in the first round of the tournament hosted by Memphis.
