CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Cincinnati junior Jason Maxiell has been selected as one of the top 30 candidates for the 2004 John Wooden Award as college basketball's national player of the year.
The selection was made by the Wooden Award national committee, which identified the top 30 candidates based on individual performances and team records at the midpoint of the season. Players who did not make the list are still eligible for consideration for the Wooden Award.
Maxiell has been the Bearcats' leading scorer and rebounder all season, posting averages of 14.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks while helping Cincinnati to a 14-1 record and a Top 10 ranking in the national polls.
Maxiell was named to the Wooden Award Preseason All-American team last summer.
Cincinnati has been well-represented in the Wooden Award selections over the years. Kenyon Martin won the 2000 Wooden Award and Steve Logan was one of the five finalists in 2002.
