BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? Laura Valldeperas set a new school record in the preliminary round of the 60m hurdles on Friday night at the Indiana Invitational. Cincinnati will be represented in eight finals on Saturday.
Valldeperas posted a time of 8.84 in the hurdles, besting the school record of 8.85 set just last week by Ashley Arnett. She posted her time in the preliminary round and will have a chance to better it in Saturday?s finals. Valldeperas also qualified for the finals in long jump (18?5.25?) and set a new personal record in the 200 meter dash of 25:67, but did not qualify for the finals.
?I think the meet is going well,? assistant coach Elisha Brewer said. ?This is the highest level of competition we?ve seen all year. It is a good pre-conference meet for us.?
Monique Brent also set a new personal record in the 400m run. Brent finished her heat in 57.78 seconds, qualifying her for the finals.
Joining Valldeperas in the long jump final are teammates Ashley Wilhelm (18?9?) and Shintara Carpenter (17?11.75?). Carpenter will also be competing in triple jump (37?5.75?). Jo Young is also competing in two finals on Saturday after qualifying in both weight throw (52?8.75?) and shot put (44?7?). She is currently undefeated in the shot.
?We are pleased with the number of people who have the opportunity to compete tomorrow,? Brewer added. ?It gives the athletes a chance to improve on today?s performances.?
A few of the events ran both preliminaries and finals on Friday. Wilhelm, competing in the pentathlon for the first time this season after setting a new school record in 2003, finished second overall with 3,611 points.
Renee Hein also placed in the top-10 for Cincinnati, clearing 5?4.5? in the high jump and tying for sixth place. Karen Berling was sixth in the 3000m run in 10:30.25, and Cristy Doll was 10th with a time of 10:47.71.
The Indiana Invitational continues on Saturday, beginning with the 5,000m run at 11:15 a.m.
