Bearcats Fall Again At USF, 14-2

TAMPA, Fla.---Cincinnati scored two first inning runs, but USF responded with 14 unanswered runs to finish off a three-game sweep of the Bearcats, 14-2 on Sunday afternoon at Red McEwen Field. The loss drops UC?s record to 3-15 on the year and 0-3 in Conference USA play. The Bulls are 17-6, 3-0.
The Bearcats got things off to a great start on first inning RBI singles by Steve Pickerell and Drew Saylor. UC starter Tony Maynard (1-3) held the Bulls scoreless in the first, before the offensive explosion started with four runs in the fourth. Matt McHargue homered in the frame, while Travis Brown and Mike Macaluso added RBI singles.
USF pushed the game out of reach in the fourth inning, plating six more runs. Devin Ivany cleared the bases with a three-run double and Brown added a two-run double in the frame. The Bulls tacked on four more in the fifth, with Bryan Hierlmeier?s home run highlighting the stanza. With a lead of at least 10 runs after the seventh inning, the game was stopped per C-USA?s Sunday travel rules.
For the game, the Bearcats continued their solid hitting, banging out eight hits, including two each by Pickerell and Elliot Salcedo. USF had 14 hits in the game, with McHargue and Brian Baisley accounting for three apiece.
Jack Nelson and Pat LeMasters each stretched their hit streaks to seven straight in the contest, while Drew Saylor hit in his sixth consecutive and Brian Beltz hit in his fourth in a row.
Casey Hudspeth got the win for the Bulls to improve to 4-1 on the year. The freshman righthander allowed eight hits and two runs in six innings, while striking out two.
The Bearcats will now gear up for their first mid-week action of the season. UC travels to Miami (OH) on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest, before heading to Purdue on Wednesday for another 3 p.m. first pitch.
