LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? No. 12 Southern Miss defeated 13th-seeded Cincinnati, 4-3, in the consolation round of the Conference USA Women?s Tennis Championship on Friday at Seneca Park.
After losing the first set, Southern Miss? Grace Kammerer came back and won the next two sets against Cincinnati?s Samantha Liu, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, to clinch the 4-3 victory for the Golden Eagles.
Lyndsey Molony and Hannah Hinton won their sixth-straight doubles match at No. 1, but Southern Miss won the next two contests to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Bearcats roared back claiming the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots. Jill Klauck, who defeated USM?s Olivia Berry at No. 5, and Hinton, who won at No. 3 against Katharina Sadofsky, both swept their opponents. Molony also won at the No. 1 singles spot, claiming a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 decision over Nicola Slater.
Southern Miss? Nikhila Narra won at No. 2 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Cristina Reyes, while Kammerer rallied back to win at No. 4 for the Golden Eagle victory.
The Bearcats conclude the tournament, tying for 13th place with Saint Louis, and finish 7-15 on the season. Molony concluded her career with a school-record 71 doubles wins, while finishing second in UC annals with 139 combined wins and sixth with 68 singles wins. Molony and Hinton finished with season with 23 doubles wins, each tying for the fourth best season total at UC.
