Reed Sunahara is coaching a team of USA players at the 2004 European Cup.

CINCINNATI, Ohio? For the second year in a row, University of Cincinnati head volleyball coach Reed Sunahara is coaching a team of the nation?s top college players in the European Spring Cup, which got underway earlier this week in Brno, Czech Republic.

The competition is recognized by the USAV as part of their National team pipeline and the US team is organized by Bring It Promotions. The tournament consists of a 15-team field and is being held from May 6 to 16. Other squads in the USA?s opening pool include Slovakia, Denmark and Azerbijan. Rounding out the list of competitors is Czech Republic (A and B Teams), Slovenia, Estonia, Turkey, England, Finland, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Belarus and Sweden. Turkey is the defending champion of the event.

?Being that this is an Olympic year, it?s a great feeder program for the US,? says Sunahara. ?This team is a pipeline for the US Team. We have a really good group of players representing the USA this year.?

Joining Sunahara on the squad?s coaching staff are Matt Darling of Auburn and former USA National Team Coach and player Greg Giovanazzi of UMBC. During last year?s competition, current Bearcats Julie DuPont and Maria Pongonis joined Sunahara for the trip overseas.
