Members of the University of Cincinnati rowing team are taking part in "Rowing Places," a collective effort with Taft High School.

CINCINNATI, Ohio---The University of Cincinnati women?s rowing team has joined forces with Taft High School in Cincinnati to form ?Rowing Places,? a program designed to teach the fundamentals of the sport to a group of 13 students from the school.

The two-week program began last week and runs through Saturday, June 19 when the Taft High rowers will compete in their first ever competition, an intra-squad dual on a lake at Eureka! Ranch in Newtown.

The main purpose of ?Rowing Places? is to introduce the sport of rowing to high school girls. The philosophy behind the program is that teenage girls, especially those facing the challenge of coming of age in a city environment, can benefit from the respect, focus, trust and teamwork which rowing offers.

?This is an amazing opportunity for these girls to not only develop the team skills that rowing offers, but to interact with female Division I athletes from very different backgrounds,? said Bearcat head coach Tim Royalty. ?Rowing is a true team sport with no stars and a large number of walk-on athletes that earn scholarships. Interacting with these athletes can give the Taft girls concrete evidence that you can be a Division I athlete.?

Under the guidance of Royalty and UC volunteer assistant Grace (Mowery) Royalty, the Taft students have practiced each week day for the past week, utilizing equipment from the Bearcats. Members of the UC Rowing team have acted as mentors for the high school athletes, while also assisting in the teaching of skills.

?The interaction and what each group will bring away from that experience will be a great benefit to the University of Cincinnati rowers and the Taft High School girls,? Royalty added.
