Stephanie Rosfeld became an assistant coach after a stellar four-year playing career at UC.

CINCINNATI, Ohio-- The University of Cincinnati athletic community was saddened on Tuesday morning with news of the untimely passing of assistant volleyball coach and UC graduate Stephanie (Meinig) Rosfeld.

?Everyone in the Department of Athletics' hearts are a little heavier today at the University of Cincinnati,? said UC Director of Athletics Bob Goin. ?We have lost one of our favorite daughters. She was a role model, a daughter, an outstanding wife, and a great mother. Our prayers truly are with Doug, Will, and the families of Stephanie and Doug.?

Rosfeld was an integral part of helping the Bearcats to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the first two as a player and the last three in a row as a member of head coach Reed Sunahara?s coaching staff. Prior to the 2003 season, Rosfeld was elevated to the top assistant for Sunahara and was primarily responsible for the coordination of recruiting, along with practice planning and scouting.

?Steph will be hard to replace,? said Sunahara. ?Everyone I?ve talked to today had nothing but good things to say about her. She worked hard as a player and she improved so much from the time she came in, not only as a player, but also as a person. Losing Steph is not only losing a coach for me, but also a great friend. She was a great role model and a great up and coming coach. Steph was well liked by everyone from parents of recruits to the players and other coaches. She will be sadly missed.?

During her stellar playing career, Rosfeld was twice selected to Conference USA?s all-conference first team. She ended her playing career as the all-time leader in blocks in both UC and C-USA history. She also holds the Cincinnati record for most games played in a career and ranks 10th in career kills.

The former Stephanie Meinig, 25, graduated from UC in 2001 with a degree in health promotions. She married ex-Bearcat football player Doug Rosfeld and the couple welcomed their first son, William, into the world in May 2004. Rosfeld is a native of Washington, Ill. where she attended Washington Community High School.

More details on funeral arrangements will be furnished as they become available.
