IRVING, Texas ? The University of Cincinnati men?s soccer team has been picked to finish fifth in a preseason poll of Conference USA?s coaches. The Bearcats lose seven starters but return 11 letterwinners from their first league championship squad, including leading returning scorer Wiremu ?Woody? Patrick, who earned a spot on the preseason all-league team.
?Conference USA is very competitive and I think the poll reflects how many players we lost,? said head coach Hylton Dayes. ?It?s not where you start the season, but where you finish it. We just hope to be playing our best soccer at the end of the year.?
Saint Louis, who has taken at least a share of every C-USA men?s soccer title since 1997, was the unanimous choice as the 2004 favorite. The Billikens also claimed four spots on the Preseason All-C-USA Team, including co-Preseason Player of the Year Will John. He shares the honor with UAB?s Leandro de Oliveira.
?I?m glad Woody?s skills and contributions have been recognized by the other coaches,? added Dayes. ?He?s been important to us and we are looking forward to him having a great senior year.?
The Bearcats earned a share of the 2003 C-USA title and a second-ever NCAA Tournament berth with a 10-4-6 record. The 2004 season opens on Sept. 1 against IUPUI at Gettler Stadium at 7 p.m.
