Salchow in second Olympic Games

SCHINIAS, Greece ?Former University of Cincinnati rower Kelly Salchow helped the United States quadruple sculls crew to a fourth place finish in the second day of qualifications at the Olympics on Sunday. The event is being contested at the Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Center.
Salchow, a 1996 graduate of UC, is representing the USA for the second time at the Games, having also competed at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Salchow of Cincinnati, along with her teammates Danika Holbrook (Durham, N.H.), Hilary Gehman (Wolfeboro, N.H.), and Michelle Guerette (Bristol, Conn.) finished second behind Germany in the second of two heats and will now race in a repechage tentatively scheduled for Tuesday. The crew battled Australia for the first 1,000 meters before pulling away and setting its sights on Germany. The U.S. boat stayed in contact with the Germans for the whole race, clocking a 6:18.63 to finish 2.14 seconds behind. Germany finished with a time of 6:16.49, while Australia finished third in a 6:23.46. Germany advanced directly to the final as did Great Britain, who won the other heat.
While at UC, Salchow competed under the Bearcats? current head coach Tim Royalty, as a member of the club team.
As a Bearcat, Salchow?s collegiate career was highlighted by a 1994 National Collegiate Rowing Championship and a 1994 Champion International Collegiate Regatta title as part of Cincinnati?s Varsity Four. She also finished fourth in the collegiate division at the 1994 World Indoor Rowing Championship.
