SCHINIAS, Greece ?Former University of Cincinnati club rower Kelly Salchow will compete for a shot at a gold medal, as she represents the United States in the finals of the quadruple sculls on Sunday at the Olympic Games.
Salchow and her teammates Danika Holbrook (Durham, N.H.), Hilary Gehman (Wolfeboro, N.H.), and Michelle Guerette (Bristol, Conn.) finished fourth in the repechage, just 0.02 seconds ahead of Denmark. The finish was good enough to place the crew in the final. The U.S. battled the Ukraine for third position for much of the race and crossed the 1,500-meter mark in third place with nearly a 2.5-second advantage over Denmark. As the Ukraine pulled away into second and the U.S. began creeping up on Australia for third, the Danes made their incredible charge, coming up just short. Russia led the race from start to finish, stroking a 6:23.13. The Ukraine finished second in a 6:24.64, followed by Australia in a 6:24.67 and the U.S. in a 6:25.39.
The top four finishers join heat winners Great Britain and Germany in Sunday?s final. The championships race is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday and will be aired on NBC between 10 and 11 a.m. ET.
