WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.---Purdue?s Kristen Hetzel scored the match-winning goal with 1:12 left in regulation to lead the Boilermakers to a 2-1 win over Cincinnati in college women?s soccer action on Saturday at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup.
The Boilermakers saw a 1-0 halftime lead evaporate as newcomer Ana Farmer tallied her first collegiate goal in the match?s 50th minute to even the score. But Hetzel played the part of hero as she netted her first score of the year, blasting in a ball from 25 yards out to send Purdue to the win in the 89th minute.
Purdue, who finished last season 14-6-3 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, are now 1-0 on the year, while Bearcats slip to 0-2 early in the campaign.
The home team struck first in the contest, jumping to a one-goal cushion when Lori Arnold headed in a cross from Parrissa Eyorokon at the 32:08 mark to ultimately send the Boilermakers to the lockerroom with a 1-0 lead. Purdue dominated the first half, outshooting the Bearcats by a 10-4 margin and going on to finish with a 19-10 advantage.
It wasn?t long into the second half when the Bearcats came back to tie the score of Farmer?s marker. Senior midfielder Amy Mink played a ball to Farmer who knocked it past Purdue keeper Lauren Mason from seven yards out to put the Bearcats on the board at the 49:37 mark.
In goal, senior Tracy Hale went the distance for UC, recording six saves. Purdue?s Mason and Maureen Carey each played a half and combined for three saves.
The Bearcats will be out for win number one of the year next Sunday (Sept. 5) when they open the home schedule against Dayton at 1 p.m. Purdue faces New Mexico in the final match of the tournament on Sunday afternoon. Following that contest, team awards and the all-tournament team will be announced.
