After opening its season with two road contests, the University of Cincinnati women?s soccer will play its first home match on Sunday, Sept. 5 against Dayton at 1 p.m at the Xavier Soccer Complex.
BEARCATS DROP TWO AT BOILERMAKER CHALLENGE CUP: The UC women?s soccer team opened the 2004 season at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup in West Lafayette, Ind. August 27-29. The Bearcats came home with a pair of tough losses.
The Bearcats dropped the opener against New Mexico, 2-0. After battling to a scoreless tie through the first 45:00 minutes, UC allowed two second-half goals to fall to 0-1-0 on the year.
On Aug. 28, UC suffered a heartbreaking, 2-1 loss to host Purdue. Sophomore forward Ana Farmer (Renfrewshire, Scotland/Cardonald College) scored her first career goal to tie the game at one early in the second half, but a Purdue goal in the 88th minute sent UC to its second straight loss.
ABOUT THE BEARCATS: UC heads into its intrastate match with Dayton with a record of 0-2. The Bearcats lost 2-1 to Purdue in the Boilermaker Challenge Cup Aug. 28.
The Bearcats are coming off a rebuilding campaign in 2003 that saw them finish with a disappointing 5-13-1 mark, after being tabbed to win Conference USA in a preseason poll of league coaches. UC mentor Meridy Glenn welcomes back six starters among 13 letterwinners from that team, including C-USA All-Freshman Team member Becky Imhoff.
ABOUT THE FLYERS: The Dayton Flyers travel to Cincinnati with a 1-1-0 record after shutting out the University of Central Florida 1-0 on Aug. 29.
UD is led by Reba Sedlacek and Tesia Kozlowski, the Flyers? leading returning scorers. Sedlacek led UD with 20 points, scoring seven goals and adding six assists. Kozlowski scored three goals and led th A-10 with 11 assists, totaling 17 points. Kozlowski scored the lone goal in UD?s win at UCF.
Head coach Mike Tucker (Cincinnati, ?69) is in his tenth year with Dayton. He has amassed a record of 135-54-5 and captured six consecutive Atlantic 10 regular season crowns.
GLENN NUMBER 10: Head coach Meridy Glenn currently ranks 10th in overall victories as a Division I head coach with 235. Her .618 (235-140-28) winning percentage in 21 seasons ranks 32nd all-time amongst Division I mentors.
OPENING GETTLER: UC will play its first contest in the newly renovated Gettler Stadium on Friday, Sept. 10 against Kentucky. The stadium, part of the Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village, features an official size soccer field with FieldTurf Pro playing surface, permanent grandstands with seating for 1,400 patrons, concession stands and restrooms, a pressbox, scoreboard with message center, and lights.
The UC Board of Trustees approved the naming of the facility in recognition of the $1 million gift given by Ben and Dee Gettler to Varsity Village.
C-USA POLL: The Bearcats have been picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll of Conference USA?s coaches. UAB, the 2003 regular season champions, has been selected to repeat, followed by Saint Louis, DePaul and Marquette.
COMING UP: The UC women will welcome the University of Kentucky on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. and the University of Evansville on Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
