The University of Cincinnati women?s soccer team opened its 2004 home schedule with a 2-0 loss against Dayton on a sweltering afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
Dayton scored the opening goal of the match when forward Reba Sedlacek gathered in a pass from forward Leah Phelps, got behind the UC defense and beat Bearcat goalkeeper Tracy Hale (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) for her first goal of the season at the 8:00 mark.
The Bearcats played passively in the first half, being outshot 9-4 and allowing the Flyers several scoring opportunities.
?There was definitely a lack of intensity in the first half,? UC head coach Meridy Glenn said. ?We needed to have all 11 girls step it up.?
The veteran Dayton team, starting seven upperclassmen, put the Bearcats away when Alicija Bredlo scored on a header off a Tesia Kozlowski free kick at 72:20. The Flyers defense was able to hold off a flurry of late Bearcats scoring chances and improve to 3-1-0 on the year.
?Dayton has maturity in the right places. They?re a good team,? Glenn commented.
The Bearcats fell to 0-3-0 on the year and have scored only one goal in three matches.
UC is in action next weekend when the University of Kentucky visits the newly renovated Gettler Stadium on Sept. 10. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
