The University of Cincinnati Women?s Soccer Team opened the newly renovated Gettler Stadium tonight, Sept. 10, with a 3-0 loss against local rival Kentucky.
The Wildcats scored just inside the 10 minute mark of the first half when Alli Haeussler gathered in a Courtney McCrudden shot that ricocheted off the post and beat UC keeper Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) to make it 1-0. The Bearcats were outshot 11-4 in the first half and had few legitimate scoring chances in the opening 45:00.
?We have got to get a better team mentality,? UC head coach Meridy Glenn said. ?We have played a tough schedule, but we just need to get tougher and play as a team.?
Kentucky built on its lead in the second half when Callie Lanphier took a pass from Elisabeth Jones and beat new UC goalkeeper Tracy Hale (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) to make it 2-0 in the 64th minute.
The Wildcats put the game away just eight minutes later when Laura Wendling scored off a pass from Kelsey Fenix for the final margin.
Hale saved a penalty kick by Ashley Schilling in the 77th minute, one of four saves on the day for the senior keeper.
The Bearcats were outshot 20-8 in the game and dropped to 0-4-0 for the first time in the team?s 25-year history.
UC welcomes Evansville to Gettler Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
