The University of Cincinnati men?s soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 24 SMU today at the Saint Louis Nike Classic at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Mustangs sophomore defender Adrian Chevannes netted the winner in the 74th minute.

Controlling play in the early going, Cincinnati jumped on top in the 11th minute on junior defender Matt Hayden?s (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) 10-yard header off John Liersemann?s (Carrollton, Texas/Trinity Christian) corner kick. SMU tied the match in the 23rd minute on sophomore midfielder Alex Smith?s 20-yard free kick. After the slow start, the Mustangs dominated the remainder of the half and out-shot UC 8-2 with a 5-3 edge on corner kicks.

SMU claimed the lead in the 53rd minute by capitalizing on an errant UC clearing attempt. After knocking the ball down, SMU?s Michael Uremovich sent Duke Hashimoto in on the left side. Hashimoto?s centering pass found freshman back
Scott Corbin all alone in front of an empty net. Corbin drilled it from eight yards.

Cincinnati tied it again less than 90 seconds later on a counter attack. Senior forward Wiremu Patrick (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington) netted a 12-yard shot with sophomore midfielder Kwame Sarkodie (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) picking up the assist.

SMU reclaimed the lead in on Chevannes? 12-yard strike. A quick combination between Smith and sophomore midfielder Chase Wileman freed Chevannes near the penalty spot.

SMU (3-1-0) out-shot the Bearcats 21-5 and had a 7-6 edge in corners. Freshman keeper Steve Sandbo did not have to make a save to record his first career win, while UC?s Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) made seven saves.

?We are obviously disappointed that we came away with two losses,? said UC head coach Hylton Dayes. ?But playing two top 25 teams in one weekend will help us down the road. We need to build on this weekend, especially the way we played against SMU.?

Cincinnati (0-3-0) returns home to face Bradley on Sept. 16.
