CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati women?s soccer team won its second match in a row with a 3-2 victory against Xavier University on Thursday night at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. UC raised its record to 2-4 with the win, while XU fell to 1-6 with the loss.

Cincinnati scored the only goal of the first half as freshman Cara Allred (Batavia, OH/McNicholas) scored on a header off a corner kick from senior Lisa Stephens (Union, Mo./Union) at the 31:30 mark. Stephens had two assists on the night.

The score remained 1-0 until the 53rd minute when the Bearcats were awarded a penalty kick. Senior Amy Mink (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) scored at 53:39 to give UC a 2-0 advantage. UC went up 3-0 ten minutes later at the 63:38 mark as junior Marie Strelka (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) found the back of the net.

Xavier was held scoreless for the first 76 minutes of the match until Shawn Reynolds found the net at 75:55 off a loose ball. XU cut the Bearcat lead to 3-2 at the 87:34 mark as Kristen Ruehlmann drilled a long shot that beat UC keeper Tracy Hale (Westerville,Ohio/Westerville South) from 40 yards out. Hale made seven saves in the game, five coming in the second half as the Bearcats held on amongst a late flurry from Xavier.

"Xavier just kept battling. It's never easy to win at Xavier," said UC head coach Meridy Glenn. "Our seniors really needed to step up tonight, and they did that."

The Bearcats have won five in a row against Xavier and are now 19-3 all-time against their cross-town rivals. UC travels to Gainesville to face the No. 6 Florida Gators on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m.
