MADISON, Wis.---Virginia?s Sarah Kirkwood had a match-high 20 kills to lead the Cavaliers past Cincinnati and hand the Bearcats their fourth straight defeat in college volleyball action on Saturday morning.
After taking game one by a 30-28 score, the Bearcats saw losses of 18-30, 25-30, 23-30 send Virginia to the victory. The Cavaliers are now 9-2 on the year with the win, while Cincinnati falls to 5-4.
Julie DuPont led the Bearcats with 18 kills, but hit just .018 as the team hit .091 for the match. After coming out blazing in the first game hitting .348, UC struggled during the balance of the match, hitting .026, .000 and -.021 in the remaining frames. Virginia wasn?t a great deal better as they limped to a .128 effort in game one, before hitting .297 in the second game. Like UC, the Cavs struggled in games three and four, hitting .000 and .125, respectively.
The Bearcats? continually improved blocking saw them register 15.5 for the match, including eight by Rachel Torblaa and six by Myanna Hellsten. Hellsten added 11 kills on offense, while Maria Pongonis had 12. DuPont led UC in digs with 14 and Natalie Dossman reached double figures for the ninth straight game with 13.
Alexis Geocaris reached double digits in kills for Virginia with 10, while adding eight blocks. Stephanie Everett had 11 blocks and Emily Kirkwood had seven, along with 42 assists.
