CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The University of Cincinnati men?s soccer team fell, 1-0, against cross-town rival Xavier tonight. UC had plenty of chances, but was unable to capitalize as they fell to 1-5-0. Xavier improves to 2-4-0 with the win.
A physical first half was dominated by the Bearcats, as they outshot the Musketeers, 7-4.
Xavier?s Matt Guidry earned a yellow card for a personal foul in the 30th minute. The Bearcats couldn?t take advantage and the teams went into the half in a scoreless tie.
Xavier netted the lone goal of the game just after halftime. XU?s Nick Frasher found himself all alone on the weak side after a cross from Jim Cummings, and put home the game-winner in the 46th minute.
The Bearcats turned up the intensity following the Xavier goal and owned a 14-7 shot edge in the second half.
?It?s frustrating. Tonight was Xavier?s night,? said Cincinnati head coach Hylton Dayes. ?Both teams played hard and they were able to score a goal.?
The loss marked the first in the cross-town rivalry since 1996 for the Bearcats, who own a 20-8-5 lead in the all-time series.
Cincinnati will open its conference season on Sept. 25 when East Carolina visits Gettler Stadium for a 7 p.m. contest.
