SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati?s men?s golf team is back in action for its second tournament of the week, when they compete in the Eastern Kentucky Colonel Classic this weekend. Play at the Arlington Golf Club is set for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25.
PREVIEWING THE TOURNAMENT: A total of 14 teams are in the field for the 2004 Eastern Kentucky Colonel Classic. The 54-hole, two-day tournament will take place at Arlington Golf Club in Richmond, Ky. this weekend (Sept. 24-25). Battling for the top spot with the host Colonels and UC will be teams from Ball State, Cumberland, IPFW, Kentucky, Lipscomb, Longwood, Malone, Morehead State, Oakland, Ohio, SE Missouri State, Tennessee Tech and Youngstown State. The first 36 holes will take place beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday, with the balance ready for an 8 a.m. start on Saturday. Eastern Kentucky was the winner of the 2003 tournament.
LAST TIME OUT: Junior John Clodfelder shot a final round 75 to finish 14th at the Butler Fall Invitational. His finish helped UC to a tie for sixth place in the team standings. Clodfelder concluded the tournament with a score of 220 after opening with rounds of 73 and 72. Classmate Justin Wilson finished just one shot behind Clodfelder after carding a 74 to finish the tournament tied for 15th. In the team standings, UC fell from second to sixth in the final 18 holes, shooting a 304 in the finale. The Bearcats finished with a team score of 889, tied with Indianapolis and just two strokes behind fifth place Youngstown State. Oakland won the team title with an 870.
CAREER BESTS: A pair of Bearcat golfers registered career best rounds at the season-opening Butler Fall Invitational earlier this week. Junior Justin Wilson and sophomore Geoff Newman each opened the campaign with rounds of 71, representing the lowest rounds of their respective careers. Wilson?s previous low of 73 came at last season?s Eastern Kentucky Spring Intercollegiate, while Newman fired a best of 72 on two different occasions last season.
NOT BECAUSE OF EXPERIENCE: Of the five golfers in head coach Kerry Sahms? line-up this week, only Justin Wilson and Geoff Newman competed in UC?s trip to Eastern Kentucky last spring.
