UC off to Unlimited Potential Bay Tree Classic

SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women?s golf team is set to compete in its second tournament of the week, beginning Friday (Sept. 24) when they compete in the Unlimited Potential Bay Tree Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston. The tournament will be held at the Bay Tree Plantation, Green Course in North Myrtle Beach, S.C..

PREVIEWING THE TOURNAMENT: The 2004 Unlimited Potential Bay Tree Classic will get underway on Friday (Sept. 24) at the Green Course of the Bay Tree Plantation. The three-day tournament will cover 54 holes, with 18 holes scheduled to begin each day at 8 a.m. A total of 17 squads will vie for the team title, including host College of Charleston and Cincinnati. Joining the field will be teams from Belmont, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, East Tennessee State, Florida International, Lamar, Marshall, Mercer, Methodist, Middle Tennessee State, UNC-Wilmington, Old Dominion, Southern Illinois, Western Carolina and William & Mary. The 2003 edition of the event featured 36 teams and was shortened by one round due to rain. Coastal Carolina came away with the team championship, while the Bearcats did not compete in the tournament.

LAST TIME OUT: Freshman Allison Mayborg shot a final round 81 to secure a top-five finish in her first collegiate tournament, leading UC at the Cardinal Cup. Mayborg slipped two spots in the finishing order during the last 18 holes, but finished just one stroke out of fourth and 14 out of the top spot. She finished the tournament with a score of 228, after opening day rounds of 72 and 75. Mayborg?s effort helped UC to a seventh place finish in the team standings with a score of 959. UC finished just three strokes behind sixth-place UCF and 18 back of fifth place Southern Miss. Senior Alysa Few and freshman Hillery Wilson also earned top-20 finishes, tying for 16th.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT: UC?s two freshmen displayed their talents in the Bearcats? first tournament of the year as each of the two newcomers finished in the top-20. Allison Mayborg finished the tournament tied for fifth with the team?s lowest round after finishing day one in third place. Mayborg carded a 72 in the opening 18 holes to finish just five strokes off the lead. Classmate Hillery Wilson was also impressive as she logged a tie for 16th in her first collegiate action. The freshmen duo feature two of the team?s top three averages early in the season.
