CINCINNATI, Ohio--On November 7, 2004, four area rowing organizations will host a brunch to welcome home rowers from the 2004 Olympic Games. The Cincinnati Rowing Club, Clermont Crew, Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, and the University of Cincinnati teams will celebrate the return of the four athletes: Kelly Salchow, Pat Todd, Greg Ruckman, and Bryan Volpenhein.

Kelly Salchow is a two-time Olympian. Salchow started rowing her sophomore year in high school for the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, and made the junior national team in 1991. She attended the University of Cincinnati to study graphic design. She rowed for Cincinnati?s club team and stroked the women?s four to a national championship in 1994. After the Sydney Olympics, Salchow returned to Cincinnati to coach the girls at the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club. Salchow?s sister, Raegan, also a UC grad, designed the unisuits for the men?s and women?s teams.

Bryan Volpenhein is also a two-time Olympian. In high school, Volpenhein played basketball and volleyball at Kings High School in Cincinnati. He did not start rowing until he was a freshman at Ohio State. Volpenhein is now an Olympic gold medalist. He helped the men?s eight win the first gold for the USA in 40 years.

Like Salchow, Pat Todd began rowing with the Cincinnati Juniors in high school. He graduated from St. Xavier High School and went on to study biochemistry at Harvard University. In the Olympics, Todd rowed in the Lightweight four.

Greg Ruckman attended Wyoming High School. He started rowing as a freshman at Harvard in 1992. In the 2000 Olympics, he finished sixth in the Lightweight four event. In Athens, he competed in the Lightweight double sculls.

The brunch will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Montgomery Inn at the Boathouse, 925 Eastern Avenue. Tickets for the event can be purchased by contacting Deb Plettner at president@cincinnatirowing.com.
