The University of Cininnati men?s soccer team (2-7-0/1-2-0 C-USA) hits the road for two conference matches. The Bearcats visit DePaul on Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. CT. UC then travels to Charlotte for a 7 p.m. match on Oct. 9.
LAST TIME OUT: Cincinnati was shutout at UAB on Oct. 2, 1-0.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS: The DePaul Blue Demons are the owners of a 2-8-2 overall record, 0-3-0 in the conference. DePaul dropped its last match, 2-1, at East Carolina.
The Blue Demons are led by Patrick Vyncke, who has scored four goals this season for a team-high eight points.
Head coach Craig Blazer (Xavier ?91) is 21-41-6 in his fourth season with the Blue Demons.
UC-DEPAUL SERIES HISTORY: The Bearcats lead the all-time series with DePaul, 11-6-2. UC defeated DePaul last season, 3-0.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS: The Charlotte 49ers welcome the Bearcats to Transamerica Field holding a 4-3-1 overall record and a 1-3-0 record in C-USA play. Charlotte earned its first conference win on Oct. 2 with a 2-0 victory at national-power Saint Louis.
The 49ers swept the C-USA Player of the Week awards for the week ending on Oct. 3. Junior forward Adam Ruud was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while junior goalkeeper Josh Beachem earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
John Tart (Furman ?81) has produced a 95-75-19 record in his ten seasons as the head coach at Charlotte.
UC-CHARLOTTE SERIES HISTORY: The 49ers hold a slight 6-5-3 edge against the Bearcats. Charlotte topped UC, 1-0, in the 2003 Conference USA Tournament.
WORKIN? OVERTIME: In the 14 matches between Cincinnati and Charlotte, the two teams have gone to overtime on seven occasions, including two double overtime matches and two C-USA Tournament matches that had to be decided by penalty kicks.
PATRICK CLIMBING CHARTS: Senior forward Wiremu Patrick continues his ascent up the Bearcat career scoring lists. Patrick has scored three goals this season, moving into sole posession of seventh place on the school?s all-time goals list with 23. He is just two goals away from sixth-place Craig McDowell (1980-83). Patrick also owns the seventh-highest career point total in UC history with 57 total points.
CUTTING IT CLOSE: Although the Bearcats are 2-7-0, they have played each match tight, with eight of nine matches being decided by one goal. Cincinnati, fielding a young team that starts only four seniors, has played a tough schedule that has included two top-25 teams and three 2003 NCAA Tournament participants.
SHOOTING BLANKS: The Bearcats have launched plenty of shots this season, outshooting opponents by a 106-105 count. But the quality of the shots has not necessarily matched the quantity. UC has been able to fire 38 attempts on goal, a league-low 36 percent. Not surprisingly, the Bearcats? leading scorer, Wiremu Patrick, has attempted 17 shots, with 10 on goal.
GOALS HARD TO COME BY: With its 1-0 loss at UAB on Oct. 2, UC has now been shutout five times in 2004. The Bearcats were shutout on only six occasions in 20 matches last season.
C-USA POLL: The Bearcats have been picked to finish fifth in a preseason poll of Conference USA?s coaches. Perennial power Saint Louis was tabbed as the top team in the conference, while UC, UAB, USF, and Charlotte look to wrestle the title away from the Billikens.
COMING UP: The Bearcats will return to Gettler Stadium on Oct. 12 for a non-conference match with the Bulldogs of Butler University before playing host to nationally-ranked USF on Oct. 16.
