CINCINNATI, Ohio---On a night when Julie DuPont set the school record for career kills, the University of Cincinnati volleyball team limited visiting UAB to -.026 hitting in sweeping the Blazers during Conference USA volleyball action on Friday night.
DuPont finished the night with 22 kills, passing Becky Tenkman?s record of 1,843 established between 1995 and 1998. DuPont now has 1,860 kills during her storied career. Her match high in kills helped the Bearcats to a 30-19, 30-20, 30-12 win and improves UC?s record to 11-6 overall and 3-0 in league play. UAB slips to 1-13 and 0-3 in C-USA with the defeat.
DuPont was the only player on either team in double figures in either kills or digs as she recorded her 13th double-double of the year with 13 digs. The senior also hit .348 for the match. Myanna Hellsten added eight kills on .333 hitting for UC, while Rachel Torblaa had six kills and Leslie Newell five.
?Overall, I thought we played pretty well,? said Bearcat head coach Reed Sunahara. ?Julie really came to play tonight and she deserves everything she has gotten so far. She has had a great career, but she can?t stop now. She needs to continue doing what?s she?s been doing.?
UC started the match out by outhitting UAB .314 to .000 en route to the 30-19 game won win. The Bearcats took an early 6-4 lead, but quickly opened up a five-point cushion after a 5-1 run. Cincinnati continued to apply the pressure to the Blazers and took its largest lead of the game at 24-14 on DuPont?s record setting kill. UAB got to within seven at 25-18 after scoring three straight points, but UC scored five of the last six, including the final three to close out the win.
In game two, UAB took a 6-5 lead after scoring three straight points, before the Bearcats answered with three of their own to retake the lead for good. UAB hung around, trailing by only five at 20-15, before the Bearcats closed out the frame. After carding seven kills in game one, DuPont added 10 more in game two to give her 17 through two games. For the game, UC hit an eye popping .533, while limiting UAB to only .116.
Game three was never in doubt as UC scored nine of the first 10 points of the game and never looked back. UAB scored on an Isabel Oquendo kill to make it 23-12, but that would be the last Blazer point of the night. UC rattled off the last seven points of the match, two on DuPont aces to close out the final game.
In addition to taking over the top spot in school annals, DuPont also climbed from sixth to fourth in C-USA history. DuPont passed not only Tenkman on the conference list, but also former Louisville star Sonja Percan. She now trails third place Stephanie Bishop of DePaul by 192 kills.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Saturday night facing USF at 7:30 p.m. A reminder to fans that for the second consecutive evening, the match will be played at the St. Ursula Academy Gymnasium.
