CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team lost its third straight match tonight (Oct. 1), 1-0, against Southern Miss at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats drop to 2-7-0 with the loss, as the Golden Eagles improve to 5-3-1.

Southern Miss netted the lone goal when a free ball game down between two indecisive Bearcat defenders, allowing Carly Barkley to slip through and engage UC keeper Jen Doerflein (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) one-on-one. Doerflein came out of the box to challenge the shot, but Barkley was able to maneuver around the freshman keeper and tap in her fourth goal of the year.

Cincinnati played in the Southern Miss end for much of the match, firing 16 shots at USM keeper Leslie Schoplein, who made five saves. The senior netminder kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard in the second half when she made a spectacular diving save to her right on a shot by UC's Becky Imhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas).

The Bearcats have now lost three in a row, all by hutout, following a two-match winning streak. UC has not scored since senior Marie Strelka (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) scored at Xavier on Sept. 16.

The loss also snapped a five-match unbeaten streak against the Golden Eagles. The Bearcats had won three straight in the series, dating to 2000.

UC plays host to Tulane on Oct. 3 at Gettler Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
