The University of Cincinnati women?s soccer team returns home for matches against two longtime rivals. The Bearcats welcome local foe Miami (Ohio) to Gettler Stadium for a non-conference match on Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Louisville then visits UC for the annual rivalry match on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
MATCH TO BE WEBCAST ON UCVISION: The women's soccer game against Miami will be webcast live through the UCVisions website. The game can be ordered as a separate event, or can be purchased as part of a larger athletic package which will include men's soccer, volleyball, baseball, and men's and women's basketball. Click on Event packages on the UCVision homepage to order the athletic package. These games will not be available in the local Cincinnati area. The dedication of the new soccer and track facility, Gettler Stadium, will be webcast live, at no charge, to all areas of the country, starting at 7:15 pm.
LAST TIME OUT: Cincinnati defeated DePaul, 1-0, on Oct. 10. Sophomore Becky Imhoff scored her first goal of the season to lift the Bearcats.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS: The Miami University RedHawks enter the Oct. 15 match with an even 6-6-1 overall record and a 4-3-1 mark in Mid-American Conference play.
Senior forward Ashley Swinehart leads the RedHawks with nine goals and 20 points.
Ninth-year head coach Bobby Kramig (Florida Southern ?82) holds an 89-57-10 overall record with Miami.
UC-MIAMI SERIES: UC leads the all-time series between the local rivals by a slim 5-4-1 count. The Fittingly, the Bearcats and RedHawks played to a 2-2 tie last season in Oxford.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS: The Louisville Cardinals head into Sunday?s C-USA match second in the conference at 4-1-1 and holding an impressive 9-3-1 overall record.
Jamie Craft leads the Cardinals and C-USA with 11 goals and 24 points. Goalkeeper Meredith Miller now owns the single-season school record with six shutouts in 2004.
The Cardinals are coached by Karen Ferguson (Connecticut ?93), who owns a 26-55-5 record in her five years with the program.
UC-LOUISVILLE SERIES: The Bearcats have dominated the all-time series against Louisville, holding a 17-2-1 mark against the Cardinals. Last season, however, Louisville defeated the Bearcats, 1-0, to snap a 10-match unbeaten streak for UC.
CARDINAL DOMINATION: The Bearcats have controlled the all-time series with Louisville in the 20-year history of the rivalry. UC has lost only twice in the series, outscoring the Cardinals by a 88-6 margin. The Bearcats have pitched 15 shutouts while being shutout only twice themselves. The fifth-largest margin of victory in Cincinnati history came against the Cardinals in a 13-1 triumph in 1986.
GETTLER DEDICATION: Prior to the match on Oct. 15, the University of Cincinnati and its Board of Trustees will hold a dedication ceremony, honoring Ben and Dee Gettler for their contributions to the university and officially christening the stadium to bear the Gettler name. The ceremony will begin at 7:15 p.m. on the field and will include remarks by UC president Dr. Nancy Zimpher, athletic director Bob Goin and a ribbon cutting ceremony. Media members are encouraged to attend.
BABY BEARCATS: A gang of young newcomers has made its presence felt for the Bearcats this fall. True freshmen Amanda Ryan, Cara Alldred, and Andrea Haney, along with redshirt freshman Rachel Epps and sophomore first-year player Ana Farmer have combined to score five of the Bearcats? eight goals this season. Alldred and fellow frosh Gigi Ernst have started each match, while Ryan and Haney have started six apiece. True freshman goalkeeper Jen Doerflein has made four appearances, including three starts. The influx of young talent portends a bright future for Bearcat women?s soccer.
SPREADING IT AROUND: Each of the eight goals the Bearcats have scored this season has been scored by a different individual. Senior Amy Mink leads the team with four points, and four players are tied for second with three.
GLENN NUMBER 10: Head coach Meridy Glenn currently ranks 10th in overall victories as a Division I head coach with 238. Her .610 (238-147-28) winning percentage in 21 seasons ranks 33rd all-time amongst Division I mentors.
C-USA POLL: The Bearcats have been picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll of Conference USA?s coaches. UAB, the 2003 regular season champions, has been selected to repeat, followed by Saint Louis, DePaul and Marquette.
UP NEXT: Cincinnati plays host to two conference opponents as the Bearcats welcome East Carolina on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. UC then wraps up its 2004 home slate with an Oct. 24 match against Charlotte at 1 p.m.
