CINCINNATI, Ohio-- University of Cincinnati senior guard Nick Williams will be sidelined at least five weeks after undergoing surgery on his left thumb. Williams had the procedure done on Monday after suffering the injury in a pick-up basketball game on the UC campus recently.

Williams suffered ligament damage that required surgery to the thumb on his left hand (non-shooting). The 6-3 Arlington, Texas native is not expected to play in UC's two exhibition games (Nov. 8 and Nov. 13), and it is too early to tell if he will be ready for the season opener on Nov. 19 against Valparaiso in Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center.

Head coach Bob Huggins was disappointed for both Williams and his Bearcats, who start practice this Saturday, October 16. "I feel really bad for Nick because he has worked hard in the off-season to get ready for his senior year," Huggins said. "At the same time, we want to make sure Nick is completely healed when he comes back because we are looking for big contributions from him this season."

Williams, who started 25 of 31 games at point guard last season, is expected to compete for the shooting guard spot on this year's Bearcat team. Williams averaged 6.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists for UC last season after transferring from Chipola Junior College. He started his collegiate career at Kansas State, where he averaged 9.0 points and 2.5 assists while starting 25 games as a freshman for the Wildcats in 2001-02.
