CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team won its second straight match tonight (Oct. 15), 2-1, against local rival Miami University. The Bearcats snapped a three-match winless streak against the RedHawks as they improved to 4-9-0 overall this season.
Senior Lisa Stephens (Union, Mo./Union) scored her first goal of the season after taking a centering pass from freshman Rachel Epps (Grapevine, Texas/Grapevine) and beat Miami keeper Megan Ortner to give UC the lead at the 14:35 mark of the first half. Stephens became the ninth Bearcat to notch a goal this season.
Miami answered in the 29th minute when Katie Boyd fired a shot into the upper right corner of the nett that UC netminder Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) could only partially deflect. Miami's Ashley Swinehart was credited with the assist on the goal, notching her 21st point of the season, fifth in the Mid-American Conference.
The teams remained deadlocked at one until the 68th minute. Freshman Amanda Ryan (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) netted her team-leading second goal of the season off of a rebound following a Becky Imhoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) shot.
The Bearcats held on to the one-goal lead throughout a cold and rainy second half. An energized crowd of 223 braved the elements to cheer the Bearcats to victory, improving UC's record to 6-4-1 all-time against the RedHawks.
"What a great home crowd," UC head coach Meridy Glenn commented. "It just makes a kid want to play."
Prior to the match, UC director of athletics and president Dr. Nancy Zimpher held a dedication ceremony for Ben and Dee Gettler, officially christening Cincinnati's newly renovated track & field and soccer complex.
The Bearcats will look for a large crowd on Sunday (Oct. 17) as they welcome longtime rival Louisville to Gettler Stadium at 1 p.m.
