Alysa Few tied for 44th at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate. |
WAYNESVILLE, N.C.---Despite every effort to regain the course, the Sixth Annual Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercollegiate was suspended due to weather, leaving first-round leading Western Carolina as the 2004 team champion.
The start of the second round was delayed half an hour to 10:00 am because of rain on an already damp course. The trio of hurricanes that pounded Western North Carolina during September and October caused severe flooding in the Waynesville and Canton areas and raised the water table. Periods of rain on Monday evening through Tuesday morning made the course unplayable.
This is the first-time in the event?s six-year history that all scheduled rounds have not been completed. The 1999 Great Smokies Collegiate Championship, held on October 25-26, endured the event?s only other delay, an hour setback due to frost on the course.
UC finished the tournament in 13th place in the team standings. Senior Alysa Few (London, Ontario/East Tennessee State) ended the event as the lowest finishing Bearcat, tied for 44th with an 18-hole total of 78.
The Bearcats will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule Nov. 1-2 when they compete in the Edwin Watts Intercollegiate.
