ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five consecutive matches with a 1-0 win tonight (Oct. 20) against No. 21 Saint Louis at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The win was UC's first ever at Saint Louis as the Bearcats were 0-6-3 prior to the victory. The Bearcats (5-7-2/4-2-1 C-USA) are 3-0-2 over their last five matches and have defeated two straight top-25 teams.
The Bearcat goal was scored by senior Jeremiah Gallegos (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret) on a header from six yards out following a free kick by fellow senior John Liersemann (Carrollton, Texas/Trinity Christian). Gallegos' sixth goal of the season tied him for the team lead with Wiremu Patrick (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington).
UC goalkeeper Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18, was true to form, making eight saves to record his third shutout of the season. Vessells has allowed only two goals in the last five matches.
"Mike Vessells had a great match. He came up with some really big saves," said UC head coach Hylton Dayes. "We defended really well tonight and that is what you need to do to win on the road."
The Bearcats have now won two straight against Saint Louis. Prior to last season, UC had been 0-14-4 against the Billikens. The win brings UC into a tie with SLU for the C-USA race at 4-2-1, but the Bearcats hold the tiebreaker.
Cincinnati returns to Gettler Stadium on Oct. 24 for a non-conference match against Bowling Green at 3:30 p.m.
