Freshman Andrea Haney scored her second goal of the season against East Carolina |
CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team lost for the seventh time in its last nine matches, 2-1 in overtime, against East Carolina tonight (Oct. 22) at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats' Conference USA Tournament hopes hang by a thread, as the team falls to 4-11-0 overall and 1-6-0 in C-USA play. The Pirates improved to 4-3-1 in conference play and now sport a 6-8-2 overall record.
Cincinnati got on the board first when freshman Andrea Haney (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) scored her second goal of the season, tying for the team lead with fellow freshman Amanda Ryan (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley). Haney headed in a free kick off the foot of senior captain Renee Balconi (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) in the 14th minute. ECU goalkeeper Lauren Church got a hand on the kick, but Haney was able to knock in the deflection.
ECU tied the match at one in the second half when the Pirates captured the ball in midfield and found themselves with a three-on-two breakaway. Meghan McCallion fed a perfect pass to Sarah Stoltz, who fired a shot past a diving Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) and into the right corner at 68:31, setting the stage for ECU's overtime dramatics.
With just under seven minutes remaining in regulation, senior Lisa Stephens (Union, Mo./Union) was injured after being tackled by a defender. Stephens was helped off the field by coaches and members of the medical staff.
The Pirates won in the extra session on Carmen Calpo's third goal of the year. Calpo took a throw in from Krystal Pabey just inside the UC box and blasted a shot over the outstretched hands of Slye and into the upper right corner of the goal.
The Pirates outshot UC, 12-10, in a defensive battle. Much of the action took place in the midfield as neither team made many runs. Each squad earned four corner kicks, but none came to fruition.
Cincinnati is next in action on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. against Charlotte at Gettler Stadium. The 2004 senior class will be recognized prior to the match.
