CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The University of Cincinnati made a reversal of roles in its 49-10 thumping of Memphis.

The Tigers came into Saturday?s contest as one of the top two offensive teams in the conference, and also leading the league in stopping the run.

But it was the Bearcats who provided the offensive explosion, piling up 424 yards in total offense, while holding Memphis to a mere 202 yards, far less than half of the 477.7 yards that the Tigers had averaged in their first six games.

Richard Hall rushed 20 times for 79 yards as UC, using a bevy of 11 rushers, ripped Memphis for 242 yards on the ground.

Hall?s counterpart, Tiger tailback DeAngelo Williams?the nation?s seventh-leading rusher, was limited to 57 yards, 90 shy of his average. Memphis quarterback Danny Wimprine, who was 14th nationally in total offense, averaging 275 yards an outing, was held to 37 total yards, 52 passing and minus-15 rushing.

?This was our best game here by far,? stated first-year head coach Mark Dantonio, whose Bearcats snapped out of a two-game losing streak with the win.

?They came into the game giving up 80 yards rushing a game and we got 242,? Dantonio observed. ?That?s execution. It was a great game called by Coach (offensive coordinator Don) Treadwell.

?We held them to 200 yards. That was a great job by Coach (offensive coordinator Pat) Narduzzi,? Dantonio added. ?They were a great throwing team and a great running team and we wanted to take away one aspect. We were able to do both.?

The victory breathed some life into the Bearcats chances in the Conference USA race. Cincinnati, now 3-4 overall, climbs to 2-2 in C-USA play. Memphis falls to 2-2. UAB, one of three teams tied for first place, was upset by Tulane to fall to 3-1. UC has games remaining with the other leaders, Southern Miss and Louisville.

Hall Starts the Rout
Cincinnati scored on its first three possessions, while keeping Memphis from attaining a first down on its first three drives. Hall capped UC?s 11-play, 80-yard drive with a three-yard run.

Antwan Giddens hauled in a 22-yard scoring strike from Gino Guidugli, the freshman?s first catch of his career, and Hall took another Guidugli pass 19 yards for a score.

A short UC punt gave Memphis the ball in UC territory early in the second period and Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 49-yard field goal.

Cincinnati added two more touchdowns before halftime, Butler Benton scoring on a one-yard plunge and Brad Glatthaar with a five-yard run.

Guidugli found Hannibal Thomas for a 19-yard TD in the third quarter. It was Guidugli?s 10th TD toss in the last three games, upping his career total to 67.

Collin Carey, Guidugli?s backup, capped a fourth-quarter drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

Guidugli completed 13 of 18 passes for 182 yards, hitting eight different receivers. Thomas led UC with four catches for 41 yards.

Glatthaar complemented Hall?s rushing stats with 47 yards in nine carries. Mike Daniels had 45 yards in 10 tries. Daniels also shined in punt returns, breaking free for returns of 21 and 34 yards, both of which set up UC TDs.

?I think this win speaks for (the players?) attitude,? Dantonio emphasized. ?I?ve been impressed with their attitude all along. That team has never quit. It?s never not played yard. I?m glad it happened for our players tonight. Our guys hung in their with great toughness and great effort.?

Cincinnati prepares to host TCU next Saturday in Homecoming on the UC campus.
