CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to six matches with a 6-0 victory against in-state foe Bowling Green today (Oct. 24) at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats (6-7-2/4-2-1 C-USA) have shutout their past three opponents and four of their past five.
Junior forward Jeff Hughes (Independence, Ky./Western Michigan) netted a pair of goals for the second time this season, scoring UC's first goal in the 10th minute on an assist from senior Wiremu Patrick (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington). Hughes also scored twice against East Carolina on Sept. 25.
Senior Jeff Henderson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored his first career goal at the 39:25 mark as he took a pass from Kenny Anaba (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) and beat BG keeper Tyler Dollins into the lower left corner.
"The goal just before halftime by Jeff Henderson was big because it gave us a two-goal lead," said UC head coach Hylton Dayes. "This was obviously our biggest offensive outburst of the season."
Patrick scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 47th minute. Freshman Lionel Jackson (Southfield, Mich./Groves) and sophomore Sean Hassman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Madeira) each scored their first collegiate goal in the second half. Freshman Anaba, Amir Ikner (Olathe, Kan./Blue Valley West) and Chad Cook (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) picked up assists on the day as 20 Bearcats saw action. Goalkeeper Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) made five saves to record his fourth shutout of the season.
The 6-0 victory was UC's largest margin of victory and greatest offensive output since a 6-0 win against TCU in 2001. The Bearcats have now outscored their opponents, 13-2, during the unbeaten streak.
