CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team scored four goals in the second half to pull away from Louisville on Halloween at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats secured a spot in the Conference USA Tournament with the win, improving to 7-8-2 (5-2-1 C-USA). The Cardinals fall to 5-8-4 (2-4-1).
Senior forward Jeremiah Gallegos (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret) scored his seventh goal of the season just 4:11 into the match on a give-and-go with fellow senior Wiremu Patrick (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington).
The Bearcats held onto the 1-0 lead through the first half before erupting in the second half for four goals.
Patrick netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 47th minute on a pass from defender Eric Edwards (Cincinnati, Ohio/Virginia Tech). Freshman Amir Ikner (Olathe, Kan./Blue Valley West) headed in a John Liersemann (Carrolton, Texas/Trinity Christian) crossing pass for his first career goal in the 54th minute.
"We have some explosive scorers," said UC head coach Hylton Dayes. "And I feel like we are playing really well right now. Today was a good day for us."
Junior Jeff Hughes (Independence, Ky./Western Michigan) finished the scoring for the Bearcats, finding the net for his fifth and sixth goals less than a minute apart in the second half. At the 83:10 mark, Hughes blasted a shot past the outstretched hands of Louisville keeper Charles Edwards. Just :57 later, a Louisville defender headed a loose ball over the head of Edwards, and with the ball looming dangerously on the goalline, Hughes was there to tap it in for the final margin. It was the third multi-goal match for the junior this season.
Freshman keeper John-Michael Boggs (Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar) made his first career start for the Bearcats, recording two saves and earning half of the shutout. Sophomore Mike Vessells (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), who had played every minute in goal this season, spelled Boggs in the second half and made two saves to close out the Cardinals.
