CINCINNATI, Ohio---For the second time in her career, University of Cincinnati sophomore Myanna Hellsten has been honored as Conference USA?s Volleyball Player of the Week. The middle blocker from Austin, Texas shares the award this week with Louisville?s Lena Ustymenko.
Hellsten had an outstanding weekend in helping the Bearcats to C-USA road wins at Southern Miss and Tulane. For the weekend, Hellsten averaged 3.88 kills and 1.88 blocks per game, while hitting .543. Against Southern Miss, Hellsten matched her career-best with 13 kills, while picking up six blocks and hitting .522. She had a career-night the next evening against Tulane, setting new career-highs of 14 kills, four aces and three solo blocks. Hellsten hit .565 against the Green Wave, totaling nine blocks and adding five digs.
This marks the second time this season a Bearcat has been honored by C-USA, as Julie DuPont received her sixth career recognition on Sept. 6. Hellsten, who last season won C-USA?s Freshman of the Year award, was also lauded by the conference on Oct. 27, 2003 after helping UC to wins over Southern Miss and Tulane. She also shared the award with Ustymenko that week.
The Bearcats are 18-8 this season and 8-2 in league play, leading Memphis by just one-half game. UC is back in action at home this weekend when they host Charlotte (Friday, Nov. 5) and East Carolina (Saturday, Nov. 6) in Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center. Both matches are slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
