CINCINNATI, Ohio -- University of Cincinnati senior Jason Maxiell has been named to the Top 50 list for the Naismith Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top men's basketball player.
The Top 50 list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, comprised of the leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. The board bases its pre-season criteria on player performances from last season.
It is the second national player of the year watch list to include Maxiell. He was named to the Wooden Award Preseason All-American team for the third straight year.
Cincinnati has had one Naismith Trophy winner. Kenyon Martin, a consensus choice for national player of the year in 2000, won the award that year. Steve Logan was a finalist for the Naismith Trophy in 2002.
Maxiell averaged 13.6 points and 6.9 rebounds last season en route to earning second team All-Conference USA and first team NABC All-District 10 honors. During his three-season career as a Bearcat, he has averaged 11.0 points and 6.8 rebounds. He is ranked No. 35 on UC's career scoring list with 1,060 points and is second in blocked shots with 161.
