CINCINNATI, Ohio---After freshman pitcher Evan Sanford took a line drive off his foot, game one of the University of Cincinnati?s Red/Black World Series was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning with the score tied at three. The game will resume on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., prior to the regularly scheduled game two.
?It makes no sense to stretch our pitchers at this point in the season,? said Bearcat head coach Brian Cleary. ?It is just wise at this point to hold off on finishing the game to keep our pitchers on schedule.?
Before the suspension of play, the two squads played a tight contest with solid hitting, pitching and fielding. Neither team wasted any time jumping on the scoreboard as a total of four runs were scored in the first inning and a half. The Black team jumped onto the scoreboard first, picking up a first inning run off of Red starter Jim Olds. With one out, newcomer Mark Haske walked and promptly stole second and then third. Following a walk by Logan Parker, freshman Dustin Alvey lined a single up the middle to put the Black team on top, 1-0.
The Red squad showed they wouldn?t stay behind long, as they scored twice in the bottom of the frame against Tony Maynard. University of Oklahoma transfer LaFringe Hayes was hit by a Maynard pitch and he later scored when Pat LeMasters smoked a double that short hopped the left center field wall. One out later, Jack Nelson lined a single to center to put his team ahead a run.
The score was tied again after the top of the second inning as the Black squad plated another marker against Olds. Haske was again instrumental in the scoring as his single scored Elliot Salcedo from second after the latter singled and moved to second on a bunt.
From there, both pitching staffs settled down as neither team scored again until the sixth inning in what was scheduled as a seven inning contest. Sophomore Brian Szarmach put his team in a position to win as he singled to score Brian Beltz against Matt Heber. The score was quickly knotted again in the last of the inning when Nelson blasted a double off the left field wall to bring LeMasters around to score.
In the last of the seventh, Olds led off against Sanford and ripped a broken bat single through the box that caught Sanford on the foot. Sanford was able to finish the seventh inning, but was unable to go in the eighth inning, forcing the early ending to the game.
?I thought we swung the bats well today and played good defense, particularly in the infield,? Cleary said. ?After our rough start, our pitchers settled down and threw well. Overall, I thought it was a well-played, tight game. Everyone seemed to execute well.?
Following game two on Tuesday, the third game will be played at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night. Admission to the Red/Black series is free and open to fans.
