CINCINNATI, Ohio ? Cincinnati held Detroit to .164 shooting to earn a 60-31 win in women?s basketball action on Sunday at Fifth Third Arena. It was the home opener for the Bearcats, who evened their record at 1-1.
Anne Stephens led three Bearcats in double-figures with 16 points and five rebounds. Karen Twehues added 13 and Leslie Knoch had a career-high 10. Freshman Ashley Brown grabbed 13 rebounds to go with eight points, two blocks and two steals.
?Ashley played with a lot of relentlessness,? said head coach Laurie Pirtle. ?She did not play that well on Friday and she took the corrections we gave her and in two days made great adjustments.?
The 31 points were the fewest ever scored by the Titans (0-1) and lowest total allowed by UC since Nov. 20, 2001 when Robert Morris scored 29. The Bearcats outrebounded UDM 51-27 and scored 15 second-chance points.
?We still need to improve our defense,? said Pirtle, ?but we are improving. Our offensive execution must also improve, as proven by the 25 turnovers. We still have a lot of work to do.?
Cincinnati-native Jennifer McGee led the Titans with nine points.
The Bearcats are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 24 when they host Ball State at 2 p.m.
UDM was held to just one field goal in the first 9:27 of the game as UC built a 13-4 advantage. Stephens scored the first baskets for the Bearcats followed by three-pointers by Toni Slaughter, Twehues and Knoch.
Leading 15-9 with eight minutes left in the half, UC scored 10-straight points with contributions from five different players to take a 25-9 advantage with 3:36 left.
Detroit pulled to 25-13 with two minutes left, but the Bearcats scored three baskets in the final 1:15. Stephens scored twice and Brown had a steal and lay-up to take a 31-13 lead into the half.
Stephens had 10 of her points in the first half and Brown had nine rebounds.
In the second half the Bearcats pushed the lead to 41-15 with a 10-2 run, five of the points coming from Knoch.
UC continued to expand the margin, pushing it over 30 at 51-20 with 7:51 left. The Bearcats got a three-pointer from Twehues with 6:12 left for the final field goal of the game for either team. The rest of the points were scored from the foul line.
