Head Coach Hylton Dayes has his Bearcats sitting at 5-2-1 in C-USA play and looking for a second straight trip to the NCAA tournament |
The University of Cincinnati men?s soccer team will close out its regular season at home on Nov. 7 against Marquette at 1 p.m. The Bearcats will honor seniors Jeremiah Gallegos, John Liersemann, Wiremu Patrick, Jeff Henderson, and Eddie Parkes prior to the match.
LAST TIME OUT: The Bearcats blew past Louisville, 5-0, as junior Jeff Hughes netted two goals. UC is unbeaten in seven of its last eight matches.
HOT CATS: The Bearcats are the hottest team in C-USA at the moment, unbeaten in their last five conference matches. UC holds a 4-0-1 record in those five matches and has outscored its opponents by an 11-1 margin. During the streak, the Bearcats defeated No. 13 USF at home and No. 21 Saint Louis on the road.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES:
The Marquette Golden Eagles (5-10-1/1-6-1 C-USA) are coming off of a 1-0 victory against Wright State on Oct. 29.
Chris Lee has scored nine goals and added two assists for 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles. Goalkeeper Steven Grow has posted two shutouts and owns a 1.08 goals against average.
Head coach Steve Adlard (Loughborough University ?72) holds a 134-108-20 in his 13th season with Marquette.
UC-MARQUETTE SERIES HISTORY: UC holds a slight 10-8-3 edge over Marquette in the all-time series. The Bearcats won the season finale last season in Milwaukee. The Bearcats won the first matchup between the schools in 1983, 3-1, also in Milwaukee.
VESSELLS AWARDED AGAIN: Sophomore goalkeeper Mike Vessells was named Conference USA Defensive Player-of-the-Week for the week ending on Oct. 24, his second straight POTW honor. Vessells made 13 saves in two shutout wins, including eights stops in a 1-0 victory at C-USA power Saint Louis. Vessells has notched four shutouts in the last five matches.
PATRICK CLIMBING CHARTS: Senior forward Wiremu Patrick continues his ascent up the Bearcat career scoring lists. Patrick has scored eight goals this season, moving into a tie for fifth place on the school?s all-time goals list with 28. Patrick also owns the fifth-highest career point total in UC history with 69 total points.
STIFF COMPETITION: Though the Bearcats are 7-8-2, they have played each match tight, with 12 matches being decided by one goal or less. Cincinnati, fielding a young team that starts only four seniors, has played a tough schedule that has included 10 teams who have received votes in national polls and five 2003 NCAA Tournament participants.
SCORING IN BUNCHES: Junior midfielder Jeff Hughes has been a consistent goal-scoring threat all season, but when he does find the net, he finds it more than once. Hughes has scored six goals in the regular season, all in three matches. He has tallied two goals each against East Carolina, Bowling Green and Louisville. Not surprisingly, the Bearcats are 3-0-0 in those matches. Including exhibition play, Hughes has scored nine goals in four matches, thanks to a hat trick against Wright State.
WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN: UC?s 1-0 victory at Saint Louis on Oct. marked just the second time in the 10-year history of Conference USA that a member of the league has defeated SLU in consecutive matches. The Bearcats topped the Billikens, 4-3, in overtime in 2003. UAB defeated Saint Louis twice in 1999, but both matches were in Birmingham.
WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN, PART 2: The Bearcats? victory at Hermann Stadium was just the fourth win for a conference team on the Billikens? home turf in the history of C-USA. Cincinnati joins Charlotte in 2000, and Louisville in 2003 as the only squads to defeat Saint Louis at home during that span.
WE?RE GOING STREAKING: The Bearcats are unbeaten in seven of their last eight, including six straight from Oct. 6-24. During the hot streak, UC has outscored its opponents, 18-4, and moved into second place in the Conference USA race.
THREE?S COMPANY: Seniors Wiremu Patrick and Jeremiah Gallegos and junior Jeff Hughes have combined to score 21 of the Bearcat?s 26 goals and record 47 of UC?s 76 points this season. The Bearcats are 7-2-2 when one of the three nets a goal. Gallegos scored two goals in a 3-2 win against Bradley on Sept. 16. Not to be outdone, Hughes scored twice against East Carolina in the C-USA opener on Sept. 25. He also posted multi-goal matches against Bowling Green on Oct. 24 and Louisville on Oct. 31. Patrick notched a pair of tallies in the Bearcat?s 3-0 win at Charlotte on Oct. 9.
UNSINKABLE VESSELLS: Keeper Mike Vessells finds his name all over the Conference USA leaderboard. Vessells is fourth in goals against average at 1.06. He ranks fourth in save percentage (.795), first in saves (70), and third with four shutouts.
SIX OF ONE...HALF-DOZEN OF THE OTHER: UC?s six-goal outburst against Bowling Green on Oct. 24 marked the best offensive output and largest margin of victory since a 6-0 win against TCU in 2001. Five different Bearcats scored in accounting for 29 percent of the goals netted for the season.
SUNDAY SCHOOL: The Bearcats are 2-1-0 on Sundays this season and have outscored opponents, 13-3. The only loss came against SMU, currently ranked No. 2 in the country.
SENIOR RECOGNITION: UC will honor five seniors prior to the Marquette match. Forwards Wiremu Patrick and Jeremiah Gallegos, midfielders Jeff Henderson and John Liersemann and defender Eddie Parkes will all play their final home match.
FRESH FACES: In the 6-0 triumph against Bowling Green on Oct. 24, 19 Bearcats saw action. Freshmen Lionel Jackson, Kenny Anaba, Amir Ikner and Chad Cook, along with sophomore Sean Hassman, notched their first career points in the rout. Jackson and Hassman scored a goal apiece, while Anaba picked up two assists and Ikner and Cook added a helper each.
COMING UP: UC will open the Conference USA tournament in Louisville either on Thursday, Nov. 11 or Friday, Nov. 12, depending on seeding.
