CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Marshall University will be the University of Cincinnati's opponent in the second annual PlainsCapital Fort Worth Bowl. The Bearcats and Thundering Herd will battle on Thursday, Dec. 23 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Marshall fills the berth vacated by the Big 12 Conference, which did not have enough bowl-eligible teams.

The Thundering Herd, a perennial contender in the Mid-American Conference, finished with a 6-5 record. They opened the season with three straight losses to Troy (17-15), Ohio State (24-21) and Georgia (13-3) by a total of 15 points. Marshall was 6-2 in the MAC and finished in a tie for second place in the East Division.

The matchup is a rematch of the 2000 Motor City Bowl, in which Marshall overcame a 14-9 halftime deficit to defeat Cincinnati, 25-14. The two schools have played each other nine times with UC owning a 5-3-1 advantage in the series.

Cincinnati and Marshall are involved in the 2005 conference realignments. Marshall, heading to Conference USA, is one of the schools which will replace Cincinnati, which is moving to the BIG EAST Conference next year.
