UC Falls in Non-Conference Action, 75-67

CINCINNATI, Ohio ? Katie Lorenz scored a career-high 30 points, including 23 in the second half, to lead North Dakota State to a 75-67 win over Cincinnati in women?s basketball action on Wednesday night in Fifth Third Arena.
Lorenz made all five of her three-point attempts and all seven free throw attempts to propel the Bison, who are in the midst of the transition from Division II to Division I, to a 15-0 record.
Karen Twehues led four Bearcats in double-figures with 15 points as UC fell to 5-10 with its fifth-straight loss. Freshman Ashley Brown recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Anne Stephens added 14 points and Bellva May had 13.
Micah Harvey recorded six points, eight assists and five rebounds and May added four steals and five assists.
NDSU shot .512 from the field, including .542 in the second half, and made 7-of-12 three-pointers. UC shot well also at .453, but was outscored at the free throw line, 24-5.
Trailing by one at the break, UC got quick scores from Brown and Emy Ogide to claim a 33-30 advantage, but Amanda Krenz evened the score with her second three-pointer of the game with 17:11 left.
The teams traded the lead back and forth before a Brandee Gibbs lay-in started a 9-1 run that gave NDSU the lead for good. Lorenz capped the run with a three-point play and two free throws for a 47-39 lead with 11:27 to go.
Stephens scored eight of her points for UC over the next five minutes, but Lorenz countered with three treys, the last putting the Bison up 10, 62-52, with 6:18 to go.
Twehues scored five quick points to pull the Bearcats within six at 65-59, but Lorenz scored the next four points and UC got no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Gibbs and Krenz finished with 10 points each for NDSU.
The Bearcats return to Conference USA play on Sunday, Jan. 16 when they host Louisville at 2 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena.
The Bison missed their first six shots and committed three turnovers in the first five minutes, but the UC offense also struggled, opening up just a 7-2 lead.
NDSU then got on track as the Bearcats went five minutes without a field goal. The Bison went on a 9-1 run, taking the lead on a Krenz three-pointer at the 12:14 mark.
May reclaimed the lead for UC at 12-11 with 9:33 to go, but NDSU scored 12 of the next 16 points, opening up a 23-16 advantage. Ohio State transfer Gibbs scored four points in the run, which was capped by a Lorenz triple.
Still trailing by seven with four minutes left, the Bearcats got on track. Brown and Ogide scored consecutive baskets and Twehues answered an NDSU score with her second trey to pull to 27-25.
May made a steal and layup to close to one point and a Twehues jumper regained the lead for UC, 29-28, with 40 seconds left.
The Bison took back the lead before the half on two free throws by Danni Heintzelman with 16 seconds left.
May had a game-high nine points at the break with two assists and two steals. Twehues added eight and Brown had six and a game-high four rebounds.
Lorenz led NDSU with seven points and Heintzelman had six. No Bison player had more than two rebounds but they held a 15-14 edge on the boards. NDSU made 10-of-11 free throws while the Bearcats attempted just two, making one.
