Swimming Opens New Year Vs. Miami, Kenyon

OXFORD, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming teams posted 10 first-place finishes tonight at Nixon Aquatic Center in a tri-meet with Miami and Kenyon. The UC men defeated Kenyon, 107-98, but fell to Miami, 120-117. The women dropped a 160-67 decision to Miami and fell, 126-71, to Kenyon.
Ann Degenstein, David Gustavsson and Ryan Yearwood each won two events for the Bearcats. Degenstein won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.06, and led the pack in the 200 butterfly, checking in at 2:05.88.
Gustavsson captured the 200 IM crown, finishing in 1:53.59 and also won the 200 breaststroke (2:07.03).
Yearwood won the sprints, taking the 50 freestyle title in 20.80 and the 100 freestyle in 45.98.
The men improved to 1-4 in dual meets this season, while the women fell to 0-5.
Other Bearcat winners included Gerdien de Jong, who won the 100 freestyle for the women in 53.16, while placing second in the 50 freestyle (24.53).
Carlo Piccio and Enrique Bayata each won one event for the men. Piccio nabbed the 200 butterfly crown (1:53.14), and placed second in the 200 IM (1:55.38). Bayata won the 200 backstroke in 1:53.49.
UC will hit the water again in two weeks as they travel to Wright State to face the Raiders on Saturday, Jan. 29.
