Senior captain Samantha Liu won her first match of the spring season.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The University of Cincinnati tennis team opened its spring season with a pair of losses on Friday and Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club. The Bearcats fell to West Virginia, 4-2, before losing to No. 60 Marshall, 7-0.

The Mountaineers (1-0) swept the doubles category while winning three of five completed singles matches. Natalia Prinz defeated UC?s (0-1) Cristina Reyes, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 1 singles while Kelly Walsh clinched the match with a thrilling, 6-4, 7-6, victory over Hannah Hinton in two seed action.

Jill Klauck, UC?s leading winner the past two seasons, opened with a victory over Kathryn Gerber, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3. Samantha Liu followed with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Raynie Theis. WVU?s Stacey Percival was a winner in a battle of freshmen after defeating Lindsay Brown, 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles play, Theis and Percival topped Reyes and Hinton, 8-5, while Prinz and Walsh downed Lui and Brown, 8-2. Gerber and Ashley Constantine completed the sweep after defeating Julie and Jill Klauck by an 8-6 margin.

Marshall (1-0) got off to a quick start by sweeping the doubles point against the Bearcats (0-2) to claim a 1-0 lead. The No. 60 ranked tandem of Danielle Hock and Joelle Good picked up an 8-2 win from the No. 1 spot over the combo of Hinton and Liu. At No. 2, All-American Ashley Kroh and Jeanne Schwartz defeated Reyes and Julie Klauck, 8-2, and Lille Nzudie teamed with Shannon Brown for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Jill Klauck and Brown.

In singles action, the Herd continued to control the action with Kroh putting on a dominating display against Reyes at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-0 win to give Marshall a 2-0 advantage in the match. Schwartz put the Herd up 3-0 with her victory at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Brown. Good was victorious at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-4 over Jill Klauck to secure the win for the Herd at 4-0.

The Bearcats conclude the weekend in Huntington by facing another future BIG EAST foe, Pittsburgh, on Sunday at 10 a.m.
