Julie DuPont is UC's 2004 volleyball MVP. |
CINCINNATI, Ohio---Senior Julie DuPont was bestowed another honor as she was named the University of Cincinnati volleyball team?s most valuable player during a season-ending awards banquet, held Saturday afternoon at the Vernon Manor Hotel.
DuPont (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) earned her second straight Conference USA Player of the Year award in 2004, while also being tabbed an honorable mention All-American. She was also lauded a first team Academic All-American by CoSIDA, in addition to being named to a spot on C-USA?s All-Decade Team. UC?s all-time leader in career kills also picked up the award for the team?s top offensive player, while sharing the captain?s award with fellow seniors Leslie Newell (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Rachel Torblaa (Savage, Minn./Burnsville).
Torblaa was also announced as the first-ever winner of the Stephanie (Meinig) Rosfeld Memorial Award. The award is named after the former UC player and coach who passed away unexpectedly last summer.
A pair of players shared the award for top defensive player as freshman libero Natalie Dossman (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and sophomore Myanna Hellsten (Austin, Texas/St. Michael?s Academy) were both honored. Dossman started all but one match for UC last fall and was the team leader in digs. Hellsten was the Bearcats? top blocker and was selected second team All C-USA.
Sophomore Noel Olson (Wheaton, Ill./St. Francis) was also recognized as the squad?s most improved player. Olson became the Bearcats? primary setter five matches into the season, replacing UC?s top setter in history, Laura Lauder.
The Bearcats finished the 2004 campaign with a 22-11 record, advancing to the semi-finals of the program?s final C-USA Tournament. UC will open its first season of BIG EAST volleyball next fall.
