The University of Cincinnati Indoor Track and Field team is looking for state supremacy this weekend as they travel to Akron, Ohio for the competitive All-Ohio Championships.
LAST TIME OUT: Jo Young continued her dominance this season by winning both the shot put (46' 6") and weight throw (54' 6") at the Fazoli?s Open at the Malcolm Athletic Center. No team scores were kept, but UC captured seven of the 13 event titles.
Young?s shot put mark ranks as the second best in school history and is only four inches short of her own school record. Jalenna Banks won the triple jump in a personal-best 37' 10 1/2", the third farthest leap in UC history.
Jocelyn Gibson posted a personal-best 5:09.37 in winning the one mile run, while Karen Berling snagged the 3000 meter title (10:28.8).
Renee Hein, who set a UC record in the high jump last weekend, grabbed her third event crown in as many tries this season, clearing 5' 7".
ALL-OHIO HISTORY: UC placed fourth in the 2004 edition of the All-Ohio meet after finishing a close second in 2003. The Bearcats set three school records, while finishing within six points of champ Bowling Green. Ashley Arnett broke the UC 60 meter hurdles record, posting an 8.82. Jo Young topped her own shot put mark, tossing the shot 46? 10?. Laura Valldeperas set the long jump mark with a 19? 4?.
Karen Berling will look to defend her 5000 meter title, after capturing the event crown in 18:00.44 last season. Other returning top five finishers include Arnett (60 meter hurdles), Jammie Jackson (400 meters), Jocelyn Gibson (800 meters), Cristy Doll (3000 meters), Renee Hein (high jump), Ashley Wilhelm (long jump), and Young (shot put, weight throw).
THROW, JO: Senior Jo Young, the UC record holder in both the indoor and outdoor shot put, has started her senior season strong, capturing five of the six events she has competed in. At the Hoosier Classic on Jan. 15, Young won both the shot put and the weight throw. At Bowling Green, she took home the shot put crown, helping the Bearcats to a team championship. Young grabbed both the shot and weight titles at the Fazoli?s Open.
HEIN BREAKS UC RECORD: Sophomore Renee Hein entered the season fourth on the all-time UC high jump list with a 5? 6? leap. She has topped that mark in each of her competitions this season, winning the event at each meet, and set a school record with a 5? 8 3/4? high jump at the BGSU Quintangular.
COMING UP: The Bearcats will travel to Columbus for the Scarlet and Gray Invitational on Feb. 19.
