GREENVILLE, N.C. ? Jennifer Jackson scored a game-high 19 points and Cincinnati committed 21 turnovers as East Carolina earned a 58-31 victory tonight in women?s basketball action at Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum.
UC shot just .214 from the floor for the game and was just 2-for-18 from three-point range.
"We didn't play hard and we didn't hit shots," said UC head coach Laurie Pirtle. "We didn't shoot well and our work ethic was not very good."
ECU opened the game on a 6-0 run before Anne Stephens hit two free throws to get the Bearcats on the board. The Lady Pirates then embarked on a 10-2 spurt over the next seven minutes to stretch the lead out to 16-4.
ECU?s lead climbed as high as 19 in the first half, as UC struggled offensively, shooting just .280 from the field and committing 12 turnovers. East Carolina shot a blistering .565 from the floor and converted the UC turnovers into 17 points.
Stephens led the Bearcats? first half effort with six points and three rebounds, as the Bearcats went to the locker room trailing, 32-17. UC?s 17 first-half points tied a season low set at USF.
Shanita Sutton paced the Lady Pirates with 10 points at the half on 4-of-4 shooting. She also grabbed four rebounds in the first stanza.
A pair of Sutton free throws put ECU ahead, 40-19, at the 15:56 mark. The Bearcats were able to get as close as 14 on a Toni Slaughter trey at 12:06. But the Lady Pirates finished the game on an 18-1 run for the final margin. After an Ashley Brown free throw at the 7:33 mark, the Bearcats went scoreless for the remainder of the game, missing their final 19 shots from the floor.
Sutton scored 18 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Stephens led the Bearcats with 13 points. Karen Twehues grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and Micah Harvey recorded six assists, becoming just the seventh Bearcat to reach the 300 career assist mark.
Edwina Williams made her first career start for UC, while Bianca Roldan-Jarus sank her first career field goal, finishing with two points and her first career assist.
The Bearcats will travel to Charlotte for a C-USA match with the 49ers on Feb. 13. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
