BOCA RATON, Fla.---For the third straight game, Florida Atlantic broke Cincinnati?s heart as the 28th-ranked Owls scored their third straight come from behind win, 11-9 over the Bearcats on Sunday afternoon at FAU Field.
Florida Atlantic scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to finish off a sweep of the Bearcats. From there, flame-throwing Mike McBryde retired the last six Cincinnati hitters, including four strikeouts, to earn the win. FAU is now 3-0 this season, while the Bearcats slip to 0-3.
Trailing 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh, FAU used a bang-bang play at first to tie the game. With Kyle Markle (0-1) on the mound and the bases loaded, Alex Silversmith grounded Markle?s first pitch to third, which Jon DeLuca scooped but his throw was wild, allowing two runs to come home.
FAU went ahead to stay in the eighth when Tim Mascia lined a two-run double to right center to score Derek Hutton and McBryde with the winning runs.
The game started as a slugfest with both teams scoring at least one run in innings two through six. Logan Parker highlighted the scoring for the Bearcats as he ripped a two-run homer to right in the fifth inning. Mark Haske also recorded an RBI double for UC.
Cincinnati ended the day with 10 hits, getting two each by Haske and Brian Szarmach. The Owls pounded out 16 hits, including three by Mascia. Hutton, McBryde, Jordan Hafer and Jonathan Shapland all added two hits for the Owls.
The Bearcats will look for their first win of the season when they return to action for a weekend series at Duke, beginning on Feb. 18.
